About this archive
Underwater Photography Magazine (UwP) was a free bi-monthly web magazine published by Peter Rowlands of PR Productions, running from 2001 to 2026 — one of the longest-running publications dedicated to underwater photography. Peter announced his retirement in issue 150. This site is an unofficial, searchable index of every issue, hosted with the publisher's permission, built to make 2001–2026 of back issues actually browsable rather than sitting in a stack of PDFs.

How this was built
Every issue's PDF was parsed to reconstruct its table of contents, extract each article's text, and crop a standalone excerpt PDF. Article titles and authors come from each issue's own table of contents, hand-corrected where the parser got tripped up by unusual page layouts. A second pass — using Claude's batch API to read each article's own text — re-derived titles the table of contents had abbreviated or gotten wrong, sorted every article into a category (see Browse by type above), and generated the keyword and product tags that power the keyword leaderboard and search. The site itself is a static Astro build hosted on Cloudflare, with search powered by Pagefind.
This archive exists because of a much smaller problem: Andy Deitsch of Inside Scuba was trying to find information on how to remotely trigger a camera inside an underwater housing, hoping there might be something about it within the pages of an issue of UwP. The magazine's own site has a search feature, but it's a limited one — it couldn't turn up an answer, and there was no way to search the full text of every article short of reading through all 150 issues' PDFs by hand. That problem became this archive, built using Claude to write the extraction pipeline and this site.
